Atiira Seed Secondary School, located in Serere District in the Teso sub-region of Eastern Uganda, has grown steadily over the years into a center of learning and community engagement. Founded to provide quality education for young people in the rural setting of Atiira, the school has become more than just an academic institution—it is a hub for innovation, creativity, and cultural pride. Guided by its motto “Aisisia Nges Aica – Together We Stand,” the school emphasizes values of unity, resilience, and community development. Its ICT Club has now taken these values beyond the classroom by launching an ambitious and timely project—the Teso Culture Hub.
The Teso Culture Hub is an online platform developed by learners to preserve, promote, and share the heritage of the Iteso community using modern ICT tools. The hub documents traditions in language, music, folklore, food, crafts, and heritage sites through text, images, audio, and video. It provides an engaging, interactive space where elders’ stories can be archived, cultural dances and songs showcased, and young people inspired to rediscover their identity.

The project is a response to pressing cultural challenges. Many aspects of Teso culture are being lost as modernization, limited documentation, and globalization take root. Sacred shrines have been destroyed in places like Katakwi, while famous landmarks such as the Nyero Rock Paintings in Kumi District face threats of encroachment and neglect. The youth, who make up the majority of the population, are increasingly disconnected from these traditions, with unemployment levels in Teso standing at a worrying 58%. Through the hub, Atiira Seed SS seeks to transform culture into a resource for education, tourism, and livelihoods, creating a positive impact for both the community and the nation.
At the launch, school leaders and students highlighted the hub’s uniqueness as the first digital platform dedicated exclusively to Teso culture. It combines traditional knowledge with ICT innovation—featuring galleries, maps, storytelling, and community submissions. Visitors can explore photo collections of traditional dancers, listen to Akogo tunes, watch documentaries with elders, and even contribute their own stories, songs, or photos. “This hub is not just for us as students,” one ICT Club member explained, “it is for our entire community, our elders, and even the Iteso in the diaspora who want to reconnect with their roots.”
The project also carries wider significance beyond cultural preservation. It directly supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as Quality Education, Decent Work, Innovation, Sustainable Communities, and Peace & Inclusion. It also aligns with Uganda’s NDP III priorities of human capital development, tourism promotion, community mobilization, and digital transformation. With tourism already contributing UGX 4.8 trillion (US$1.28 billion) to Uganda’s economy in 2024, the hub positions Teso to benefit from cultural tourism while addressing unemployment and youth engagement.
Moving forward, sustainability will be ensured through continuous updates from schools, elders, and cultural institutions such as the Iteso Cultural Union. Partnerships with NGOs, universities, and the Ministry of Tourism will expand its reach and improve technical capabilities. Social media campaigns are planned to keep Teso culture vibrant and visible both locally and globally.
The launch of the Teso Culture Hub is a milestone for Atiira Seed Secondary School, showing how a rural school can lead in both innovation and cultural preservation. By merging digital skills with indigenous knowledge, the students have built a platform that will educate, inspire, and unite generations. The hub is now live and open to the public, inviting everyone—from elders to youth and diaspora communities—to contribute and help preserve the rich and diverse heritage of the Iteso people.
